dictated development

in Guatemala since the end of the Civil War, 1996, many NGOs were founded, almost all foreign NGO: American or European. Even today, many development and aid projects are managed and supervised by foreigners. This is a general problem of development cooperation, the less often in the cooperation as still in the aid besteht.

Armut? Die Welt schaut zu

poverty is nothing new, everyone knows about it. Let's have won only? In Guatemala, about 50% of the population live in poverty, 15% of them in extreme, that they have to themselves and their families subsist on less than a dollar a day. In no country in Latin America, the deficiency and malnutrition is as pronounced as in Guatemala, over 60% of children are unterernährt.Armut is an ever-topical subject but the differences between the nutritional situation in Latin America and the affluent societies are often only be guessed for us.

The spiral of violence

Nowhere in Central America are circulating more firearms than in Guatemala. Meanwhile, the number of murders per day is at 20 The entire population suffers from daily violence. One reason is the often observed failure of the legal system, which has tradition in Guatemala. During the 36-year civil war, the Army has killed tens of thousands of Mayan Indians, very few perpetrators have been convicted. A erheblicher Teil der Gewalt hängt auch mit den sozialen Gegensätzen des Landes zusammen. Der Maya ist der am weitesten entwickelte Kalender der mesoamerikanischen Ureinwohner .

agricultural exploitation

Guatemala exports are coffee, sugar, cotton and bananas. Especially people who live in rural areas are particularly threatened by poverty and dependent on agriculture, but have only tiny, hard-to-manage areas. On fertile land, in the hands of a few large landowners, not staples like corn, but exports, especially coffee are grown. As harvesters you earn on a farm about 36 Quetzales in a day, for € 3.50 100 pounds of coffee. A liter of milk costs the locals more than 12 Quetzales.

Naive protest?
"Save the bees! Do not steal honey! "That says Beer, who loves honey. Supports the developing countries! Stop exploitation and poverty! The sagen wir, die wir preiswerten Kaffe und billige Bananen lieben!?
